Be your spouse’s cheerleader from the sidelines

Your spouse wants to try something new – a diet, a side hustle business, whatever. Of course, you want to show your support, but don’t overdo it. Don’t take over.

– Show that you believe that they are fully capable of making good choices and succeeding. Don’t jump in with your own ideas, unless you are asked. You might ask questions that can help them build their vision and plan and focus. Ask how you can help support their efforts. “That sounds exciting! Let me know what you would want from me and what you don’t want me to do.”

– Cheer them on from the sidelines. Congratulate and celebrate on successes – in the right proportion. Don’t exaggerate; it can come off as condescending.

– Encourage through the setbacks.
