Not only does comparing ourselves to others steal our happiness, it adds more stress, worry and regret. Comparison is corrosive. It eats away our ability to be content and confident. It is a poison that kills the love we have for ourselves.
Often, we see only the best from other people’s lives and contrast that with where we feel we’re at. That’s not fair to yourself.
It is possible to admire what your friends have without feeling the need to put a dampener on your own life. It’s up to your mindset.
- Think about in which areas you do most of your comparing (material possessions, accomplishments, looks, relationships, etc.) Start with one area to work on. Reflect about your reality for that area. If you are comparing yourself to others’ successes, is it that they have been doing that for longer than you? What are the tradeoffs that you are making in your life – are you home more and make less money thus you have less things? And then, there are some things that you simply can’t change – like your height.
- Recognize that everyone has flaws and limitations and challenges -even if no one can see them with the naked eye.
- Cultivate an attitude of gratitude. When you come from a place of being grateful for your own life, your talents and abilities, you’re less likely to make ugly comparisons with others. You are unique, brilliant and a work in progress.
Every minute you spend wishing you had someone else’s life is a minute spent wasting your own.
