Confirmation Bias: When people would like a certain idea or concept to be true, they seek and embrace information that confirms that view while ignoring, or rejecting, information that casts doubt on it. They are motivated by wishful thinking.
Someone begins with a faulty assumption and then looks for evidence to prove their assumption. “My spouse just doesn’t care about me.” They will then summarily disregard all the instances where their spouse did show concern and focus only on the actions or inactions that ‘prove’ that their spouse doesn’t care. They may interpret neutral acts and words as negative just to prove their point.

It is worthwhile to question your thoughts and look for instances that prove you wrong. You’ll get a more balanced view of the situation.
