Separate problem discussion from problem solving

Discuss the problem fully before attempting to solve it. So that you aren’t solving only part of the issue.

It is much easier to solve a problem when all the details are out in the open. Each of you should share your perspectives, underlying needs and wants so you both can see the complete picture and get to the heart of the issue. (This should be done in a nonjudgmental and respectful discussion.)

A full conversation into the problem and the different perspectives can bring you together as a team against the problem. Often, teamwork is needed to fully deal with the problem.

Lastly, many problems won’t even need to be resolved after a good conversation about it. Sometimes, you might realize that there isn’t a problem after all. Or, the problem may dissipate after feeling heard and understood.
