Taking initiative is a form of self-empowerment.

Initiative is the willingness to act. It is being proactive. It is stepping forward. Even without expressly being asked or waiting for permission. Even without conditions being “just right”.

Initiative is a mindset. It is also a skill; and it can be developed.

1. Be the First. Be the first to say “good morning”. Be the first to call your friend. Be the first to volunteer. Be the first to make a suggestion. (Make a little private competition out of being first.)

2. Be Brave. Take the chance – at least you’ll be in the game. Being brave does not guarantee success; some gambles pay off and others don’t. At the very least, you will have stretched your comfort zone and tried.
It may be hard and awkward at first. Try with smaller things and you’ll grow to more initiative.
