What to say when your words come out wrong

We all have moments when our words don’t land the way we intended. When that happens, it’s important to acknowledge the impact of what was said. Try saying, “I can see how that was hurtful,” or “I understand how that could have been confusing.” These phrases show empathy and validate the other person’s feelings. Follow it up with, “That was not my intention,” to clarify that you didn’t mean to cause any harm.

Then, express your desire to make it right: “I’d like to try that again,” or “I’d like a redo.” If they respond positively, take a moment to rephrase your thoughts and start over. This approach not only fosters understanding but also strengthens your connection by showing that you care about how your words affect others.
