When your spouse says that they want to talk, they really want to be understood.

“I want to talk about this.” It’s not so much that your spouse wants to talk, as much as they want to be listened to and understood. They want to see that you care to hear what is going on for them, their perspective, their dreams, their worries. They want to know that they matter to you.

Make time for that conversation. As soon as possible.
Be totally present (put your devices away).
Listen fully. Engage in the topic they want to talk about; don’t move to change the topic.
Ask questions to better understand their thoughts and feelings.
Don’t rush through the conversation.
