Why true listening matters in conversations

[The Power of Listening 3/3]

Good listening is all about curiosity, an open mind, and a willingness to see things differently or change our actions based on the conversation. When we shut ourselves off from being open and curious, we miss out on truly understanding others— their perspectives, ideas, and requests.

Too often, we’re only sort of listening. Sure, we’re not talking over the other person, but we’re not really listening to learn something new either. Instead, we’re busy formulating our response or letting our emotions cloud our judgment. However, when we’re curious and quiet as the other person speaks, we can take the time to respond thoughtfully, without emotion.

📌And here’s the kicker: Studies have shown that when we’re not listened to, our own thoughts become less clear. So, when we don’t truly listen, neither party’s thoughts are clear, making the conversation frustrating and disconnecting for both. And when we don’t listen, the other person usually tunes us out too—in a vicious cycle.
