A better way to respond when your buttons are pushed.

When your buttons are pushed, you can have a very strong emotional reaction, such as anger, irritation, or exasperation.  But, there’s a better way to respond.

If you admit it, you probably have a few hot buttons to which you are sensitive. Think about just one of those. Who and what tends to push it?  How do you usually react?

Then, think about what would be a better response. Pre-plan how you will respond.

The next time that button is pushed, take 3 deep meditative breaths and respond with your better alternative reaction.

At some later point, you might reflect or delve into why that is a button and how to put it in context so that you don’t have such strong reactions to it.
