When you work through your budget together, determine an amount that each of you can each spend on miscellaneous items each month. This could be for things that each of you want, but don’t really need. Or that the other spouse doesn’t really understand.
The idea is that these purchases (or donations?) can be made without having to explain to each other. This can prevent lots of needless arguments about what one spouse might consider frivolous expenditures.
This can be accomplished by having individual credit cards, debit cards, online payment account, checking accounts, etc. in addition to the joint accounts.
