When angry, say less and listen more.

“Speak when you are angry and you will make the best speech you will ever regret.”

When your emotions are negative – anger, frustration, disappointment, etc. – the more you say, the higher the likelihood that there will be negative words and a negative aftermath.

Rather, say less and listen more. Be curious about what the back story behind the other person’s words or actions. “When you said that, I felt angry. I want to better understand what your intent was.” Listen with curiosity to understand, not to pounce.

Listen with silence. Don’t respond the second they are finished talking, take a moment to absorb and process what was shared before talking.

If you feel the conversation is going to burst into negative energy, take a break to calm down and regroup.

The more emotionally charged the issue, the more silence is required.
